The Myth of Mycenae & Epidaurus

Discover Mycenae, the former ‘City of Gold’ and centre of commerce. The fortified palace here is one of the earliest examples of sophisticated citadel architecture. Mycenae’s nobles were entombed in shaft graves, then later in tholos tombs, which you’ll see dotted around the outside of the palace walls. Take a look at the Treasure of Atreus, or the tomb of Agamemnon as it’s also known. It’s the best preserved of all the tholos tombs you’ll find here. After Mycenae, the Triumphant Theatre awaits. Get ready to be impressed as your guide demonstrates the near-perfect acoustics generated by this ancient masterpiece. The theatre at Epidaurus really does need to be seen to be believed. It’s got the only circular Orchestra to have survived from antiquity, though the altar that once stood in the centre has now gone. Even today, the theatre’s still in use - for a popular summer festival of ancient drama.

It was designed to withstand all artillery, but it fell to the Ottomans in 1715 after a siege of just one week and then to the Greek rebels after a lengthy 18-month campaign. The largest complex is made up of a single curtain wall with seven self-sufficient forts, now named after Greek heroes. After your guided tour there’ll be some time to capture those breathtaking panoramic views on your camera.

Exploring Nauplion on Foot
Nauplion was once the capital of modern Greece, and you’ll have the whole morning to explore it on this walking tour. From the port, we’ll make our way over to Kapodistriou Square and park. This area was dedicated to the first governor of Greece, and from here the narrow streets are paved with marble and lined with elegant neoclassical mansions. Heading off through the quieter back streets, you’ll visit the old Catholic church and the Church of Agios Spiridon, which was built in 1702. Next, you’ll take a look around the Museum of Komboloi, dedicated to the worry beads you’ll find all over Greece. And after that, you’ll walk through Syntagma – or Constitution – Square, to the Popular Art Museum. This place has an award-winning display of folk costumes and traditional textiles. To round the morning off, we’ll visit Karonis Wine Shop, where you can try meze and ouzo before we walk back to the ship.

Mycenae & Wine Tasting
We’ll kick this tour off with a scenic drive to the ruins of Mycenae, passing the ancient sites of Tiryns and Argos on the way. You’ll enter the ancient city through the famous Lion’s Gate, which was excavated in 1876. And inside the acropolis walls you’ll find ancient relics and royal tombs including the Beehive Tomb, which is named after its unusual shape. Step inside it and you’ll see the roof reaches high up into a perfect peak. Once you’ve had a good look around, we’ll make our way over to a local winery for some refreshments. You’ll be met by the owner, Mr Skouras, who’ll take you on a tour of the vineyards. You’ll see how the wine is made and find out all about Agiorgitiko – Greece’s famous red-grape variety. Plus, you’ll get a chance to sample some of the tipples produced here before we make our way back to the ship.
